Optometric Examinations [Eye Tests]. Full-scope, holistic, thorough visual examinations. Tailored to individual needs. B+B determine the best, most accurate prescription for clear & comfortable vision. We also evaluate general health as it relates to the eye & examine the internal & external eye & structures, with advice & referral as necessary. Trained in screening for: Glaucoma, cataract, diabetes, eye-related neurological problems, hypertension, macula degeneration & the like. We advise on ergonomic & environmental visual needs & provide Computer Vision Services.

Contact Lenses: One of New Zealand's first providers. B+B have the skill & experience to draw on in determining your best options. Whether it's an occasional use daily disposable - for sport or social use - or a desire to avoid spectacles or reading glasses, we can advise you. We specialise in fitting & management of complex problems such as keratoconus, astigmatism, irregularly shaped eyes and high degrees of 'short & far sightedness'. We provide options for the 'over forties' who find their arms are becoming 'too short'. We provide many of the aformentioned options in daily disposables. Payment can be tailored to suit. In-house cleaning, disinfection & polishing of lenses is available.

Computer Vision: In this technological age, many people experience problems with prolonged near vision & computer work. We specialise in the management of computer vision syndrome [CVS] & the provision of individualised stress-relieving lenses & filters. A visit to our Optometrists can help address your problems in this area.

Child Vision Care: Experts agree that it is critical that normal visual development takes place before school going age. A thorough visual examination is important. Most agree that this takes place no later than age four to six. If there is a history of squint, lazy eye, learning disability, hyperactivity attention deficit disorder [HADD], severe eye problems or high degrees of refractive error the child should be examined by age two. If you suspect your child is not seeing or developing normally, or you notice cloudiness of the eye, an eye 'turning in', excessive watering or mucous discharge, we recommend examination as soon as possible.

Vision Therapy & Learning Disabilities: We arrange vision therapy for the treatment of squint [eye turning], eye tracking & teaming problems as well as for myopia control & for improving eye-hand co-ordination for sports & hobbies. We can also recommend specialist referral for the remediation of learning & perceptual problems.

Occupational Vision Services: We offer Visual Examinations for Police, Armed Forces, Fire Fighters, Cabin Crew & a host of other job applications and certification, with advice & corrective options tailored to these special needs. We are accredited NZ Police Vision Examiners for both Level I & Level II.

Designated Optometric Examiners for Maritime Safety. B+B are one of few NZ providers of the Lantern Test. We provide the necessary testing & evaluation for the strict criteria associated with visual needs at sea.

Driving vision: There are visual standards that are relevant to obtaining & maintaining a driver's licence. Periodic re-assessment is needed. To save time, trouble, queuing & frustration we provide you with the official LTNZ 'Eyesight Certificate for Driver's Licence' that certifies your vision is above the standard. We offer options that enhance vision at night - such as antireflection coatings - and provide filters & sunglass lenses that enhance vision & protect against UV by day.

These are some of the general & speciality services that we provide at Barry + Beale. There are many others. We have a battery of hundreds of tests, assessments & evaluations that we draw on to handle everything, from straightforward cases to the most complex.

Although many spectacles & contact lenses we provide are of a standard, quality & complexity that necessitates custom manufacture & finishing, we do have a large range of spectacle & contact lenses in stock. In many cases we can provide complete glasses in a few hours & contact lenses in a matter of minutes.

Warning..

There are some who seek your custom with offers of 'half-price' & 'FREE Eye Tests'. This is misleading. This typically only applies if you purchase your frames & lenses from them. Try requesting your prescription to have it filled elsewhere & you will likely have to pay for the exam. This implies the eye test is 'hidden' in the cost of the glasses. This form of marketing cheapens the value of VISION, our most important sense. Fortunately most people are aware of the saying "You get what you pay for".
