  1. An intriguing site with a variety of optical illusions: Impossible shapes, ambiguous images & things that seem to move.
  2. A fascinating site with Three Dimensional Images that you can view on your computer screen.
  3. 'In Contact' articles on the NZ Optics web site.

Philip Forscutt [RDONZ] has been involved in the optical industry for 31 years. Originally from Christchurch, he started as an optical technician later moving to Auckland where he quickly found his passion working with people in dispensing & optometric practices. He qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 1998. He enjoys helping people select fashion eyewear & utilising the latest lens technology from Europe & Asia. Combined with lighter titanium frames, higher prescriptions no longer need to be unsightly but comfortable & fun to wear. His goals are to exceed client’s expectations. To see clients leave with their new eyewear, comfortably fitted & correctly adjusted makes dispensing very rewarding. Contact Phil via email at phil@optom.co.nz should you have any special requests for frames or questions regarding lenses or eyewear.

Alice Newman has a long history of Customer Service, beginning when she first worked at the swim & gym facility, Onehunga Aquasport. She also worked for a medical group - Your Health Centre in Papatoetoe [Osteopaths] - before starting at Barry + Beale in 2004. Alice also studied Office Administration and Computing at MIT. Her main duties include Insurance and Bulk billing accounts, client liaison, welcoming patients & clients, inquiries, appointments, filing, scanning, record keeping & other administrative duties. She also helps out with some minor repairs with spectacles where she can. Alice enjoys challenges that lie ahead & is keen to learn more about the Optometric World & Eye Care. Alice is happy to assist with any questions you may have.

Rochelle Yukich. Rochelle's main role is in the contact lens department at B+B. This entails welcoming patients & clients, making appointments & instructing people on the safe use, insertion, removal & care of their lenses, e-mail, recalls, newsletters & numerous other duties necessary for the efficient running of the office. On top of all this - just so Rochelle doesn’t get bored – she also types reports & is responsible for the ordering, tracking, despatching, checking, verification & disinfection of all our custom-made contacts, as well as control of the 1000's of lenses we have in stock at any given tim. As a front line person she handles the numerous enquires we receive with aplomb.

Tracey Bennell is our part-time Accounts Assistant. With nearly thirty years experience in Administration & Accounts work including IT management, Tracey is very happy to be working with people again as opposed to computers, citing “…we humans may be illogical at times, but at least we respond to a smile…” Having worked for diverse employers such as The Australian Opera, BBC Bristol (don’t ask her about badgers!), University of Auckland, British Aerospace, Mainzeal & NZ Post, Tracey reckons she's seen it all. Except for when she stopped seeing anything. An acute outbreak of toxoplasmosis in her left eye & myopia in her right, left her having to crawl up cockroach-infested streets in Manly, Sydney to get home. Tracey says she knew it was going to be a bad day when everyone she looked at had pointy-heads. Tracey is grateful to Barry + Beale for their commitment to keeping her seeing straight. Likewise we are thankful to Tracey for keeping our books straight. Outside interests include Yoga, gardening, entertaining & oil painting.

Karen Saks has been with Barry + Beale as a part time optometric assistant for over a year. She enjoys the daily interaction with our patients at the front desk. Karen has a Fine Arts degree and a creative background in the publishing and printing industries. She especially likes the fashion aspect of optometry, helping patients select frames that compliment and support their looks and achieve the image that they want to project. Other interests include architecture, interior decorating and fashion. Yoga keeps her fit and healthy.

Barry + Beale are fortunate to have multi-skilled staff & practitioners who share a great understanding of & passion for all aspects of Optometry & Dispensing.

Our staff can communicate in a variety of languages and even 'stralian. We can arrange translators - by appointment - in various additional languages including Japanese, Mandarin and Cantonese.

The History of Barry + Beale

Established 1902
Excerpts from our 'centenary year celebrations' in 2002

Barry + Beale was founded by the late Samuel Barry in February 1902. He qualified on the 13th March 1899 as a DIOPTRICIAN by the OPTICAL SOCIETY OF THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA and wishing to gain wider experience before returning to NZ it was arranged that he should join the Manchester practice of Samuel Cowan, who was at that time Vice President - later President - of the British Optical Association.

Working, as he then was with a personage so active in B.O.A. affairs it was to be expected that Sam Barry would take the B.O.A. examinations and the records show that on 5th November 1901, he sat and passed. The Dioptric Review of December that year notes that the colonial student [Barry] obtained a 'high average'.

Returning to New Zealand, a practice was started in Palmerston North, but shortly afterwards the larger population of Auckland beckoned and a move was made. On 20th February 1902, the first purely ophthalmic optics practice was commenced in Auckland, by the youthful but, for those days, highly qualified Samuel Barry. In such early days it was the vogue to be a jeweller/optician or to associate the 'selling' of spectacles with some other more lucrative trade, hence it must have taken no little courage to commence as a purely 'sight testing' Optician, designated then as an Optometrist. The practice of Barry + Beale has now functioned non-stop for 100 years within 100 meters of the corner of Wellesley and Queen Streets, Auckland City.

When the first New Zealand Association of Optometrists was formed in 1912, we naturally find the name S. Barry amongst the members and, during the years 1924 to 1926, he was a member of the Executive committee. During this period he was also President of the Auckland Association of Optometrists, affiliated to the National body, which, at this time, was mainly concerned with official recognition. This came in 1928 when the New Zealand Opticians Bill became law and the Opticians Act became operative from the 1stJanuary 1929. It is considered that pressure from the B.M.A. resulted in the term 'Optometrist' becoming 'Optician' in the Act. He was recognized with the following award presented to him in 1958 by the Institute of Opticians of New Zealand, which reads;

"Honorary Membership awarded as recognition of his long years of outstanding service and sincere interest in the welfare of the profession of optometry"

By 1908 the practice had grown to the point where more help was required and on the advice of business acquaintances Samuel Barry recruited James C Beale who was at the time working in a Thames bank. Thus the name Barry + Beale was born and the fine traditions of the practice began with input from these two widely differing gentlemen.

The practice he started continued with his son, the late W.M.P. Barry [FBOA].

Barry + Beale, often referred to as 'B+B' has, over the past 100 years, served as one of the foremost optometric practices and indeed many of New Zealand's leading optometrists, dispensing opticians, assistants and technicians gained experience and honed their skills at B+B.

The first pair of bifocal spectacles prescribed in New Zealand were in fact manufactured in Barry and Beale's spectacle laboratory. B+B have also been the first or among the first to introduce various technologies and skills - for. example the introduction of haptic and hard contact lenses by Eric Sellers in 1961. Many contact lens wearers - still going strong today some 40 years later - owe their success to the skills of Eric. Among our current practitioners, partner Roger Apperley continued the fine work started in orthoptics and became one of the first practitioners in NZ to become involved in Behavioural Optometry and Children's Vision. Naomi Meltzer, also a partner, has also developed her niche in Sports Vision [with many successful shooters under her care] and has also become an expert in bifocal contact lenses. Alan Saks joined the practice in 1996 and specialises in complex contact lens patients, particularly toric and keratoconus fittings.

More details on the partners and staff can be found under the 'Our People' link.

Barry + Beale owe much of their success to the support of the people of New Zealand over the past century & offer our sincere thanks.
